The #1 Question We Hear at Farmers Markets
“What’s with the goat's milk?”
Ah, what a great question! This is one we particularly love to answer!
The problem is...it can be a long answer haha.
For starters, goat milk has been used in skincare for thousands of years. And now we're at a point where science can help us answer what goat milk does for our skin and why it has so many benefits.
Let's start with one of my favorite answers that modern science has given us...
pH!
Believe it or not, goat milk has a pH that's very similar to our skin. Our skin typically has a pH between 5 and 6. Cold-processed soap without goat milk generally has a pH around 9 to 10, while our goat milk soap has a pH around 6-7.
Just from the numbers, you can see the difference (and how much closer our soap is to your skin's natural pH).
But now you're probably thinking...
"Why does that even matter?"
Again, great question!
A lot of damage to our skin can happen during the cleansing process. Our skin has a natural protective barrier that helps keep it soft, moisturized, and healthy. When we wash our hands, face, or body with a soap that has too high of a pH, it can disrupt that natural skin barrier and throw off our skin's natural pH. That's what can lead to many common skin issues in the first place.
And because we wash our hands so many times throughout the day, that barrier is constantly being challenged. Over time, this can contribute to dryness, redness, itching, and, for some people, even eczema or other skin concerns.
Because the pH of our goat milk soap is so close to that of our skin, it helps reduce the disruption to that natural skin barrier, leaving your skin feeling healthier, happier, and more comfortable.
Now, a follow-up question we hear a lot is about the lye.
Obviously, lye is very high on the pH scale, coming in around 13 to 14. So how does that affect the finished goat milk soap?
Well...this is the magic of soap making!
During saponification (the process where soap is actually made), all of the lye is used up. It reacts with the goat milk, oils, and butters to create soap. This process helps balance everything out, leaving the finished bar with that skin-friendly pH that's much closer to your skin than many traditional soaps.
Pretty cool, huh?
And maybe a little hard to believe!
