Confession: I Had No Idea What “Natural” Meant Either
I used to see “natural this” and “natural that” everywhere. Local stores, farmers markets, craft fairs… you name it. But honestly? I never really knew what “natural” actually meant. Most of the time I was too nervous to ask because I didn’t want to sound silly, so I would just smile, nod, and trust whatever the label said.
Eventually my curiosity got the best of me, and I finally decided to do my own research to figure out what “natural” really meant, especially when it came to soap.
For soap specifically, “natural” usually means it’s made with real ingredients like oils, butters, clays, botanicals, and in our case, fresh goat milk. These ingredients are used to create and nourish the soap naturally instead of relying heavily on synthetic additives.
That made me wonder… what’s in a lot of regular store-bought soaps then?
Many commercial soaps and body products contain synthetic detergents and chemical additives. For example, phthalates are often used to help fragrance last longer. Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in liquid products to extend shelf life. Ingredients like SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) can sometimes be irritating to sensitive skin. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, but learning about these ingredients really changed the way I looked at the products I used every day.
Another thing I learned is that many natural products are made in smaller batches. Without relying on heavy preservatives or shortcuts, the process simply takes more time, care, and hands-on work but we think that’s part of what makes them special!
That’s one of the reasons we love making our goat milk soap. We use ingredients we feel good about and work hard to create a bar that feels luxurious and moisturizing without loading it full of unnecessary chemicals.
